Adana Province

Location of Adana Province

Adana Province is a province with a surface area of 14.030 km2, located in the Mediterranean region of southern Turkey. The provinces adjacent to it are Mersin to the west, Hatay to the southeast, Osmaniye to the east, Kahramanmaraş to the northeast, Kayseri to the north, and Niğde to the northwest. Its capital is the city of Adana. The name of the city is believed to have come from a legend that Adanus and Sarus, two sons of Uranus, came to a place near the Seyhan River where they built Adana.

The Adana city is formed from its two main parts: Seyhan and Yüreğir. Seyhan, the more developed western part of the city is located on the right side of Seyhan River. Yüreğir is located on the left side of the river, and next to NATO's Incirlik Air Base is located within this province. Seyhan and Yüreğir are also the names of central district administrations in the city center.

The north of the city is surrounded by the Seyhan Dam Lake, was built in 1957. The lake is used to produce electricity, and to provide the irrigation water to the lower part of Çukurova plain, agricultural production area located in the south parth of the city. Two irrigation canals in Seyhan part of the city flows to the plain area passing through the city center from east to west. Also there is also another canal is used for irrigating the Yüreğir plain, located on the southeast part of the province.

Other districts of the province are Aladağ (formerly Karsantı), Ceyhan (formerly Urfiye), Feke, İmamoğlu, Karataş, Kozan (formerly Sis), Pozantı, Saimbeyli (formerly Hacın/Haçin), Tufanbeyli (formerly Mağara), and Yumurtalık (formerly Ayas).

Adana is famous for its kebab and şalgam. Şalgam is a salty fermented juice made from purple carrots. Bicibici (pronounced as bee-jee-bee-jee) made from diced su muhallebisi ("water pudding"), red rose water and sugar and served with crushed ice on the top, is also a famous local dessert consumed especially in summer time like icecream.

Osmaniye Province was formerly part of Adana Province.
