Amor Prohibido



Amor Prohibido is the name of a single and an album by Tejano singer Selena. In the single, the singer sings of a man and a woman who fall in love, but is forbidden. The piece is considered to be autobiographical, as Selena herself encountered a very similar situation.

Album history

The album consolidated Selena as one of the superstars in the Latin music market with the biggest crossover potential. Continuing the formula of her previous albums, A.B. Quintanilla III teamed up with Pete Astudillo and Ricky Vela to come up with the possibly the best album became hits at radio stations in the U.S. and Mexico. Unforgettable tracks such as "Amor Prohibido", "No Me Queda Mas", "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", and many others became instant classics. Selena recorded a duet with pop group Barrio Boyz titled "Dondequiere Que Estes" prior to recording "Amor Prohibido". The duet was another hit for Selena. This track originally appeared on the Barrio Boyz album and is included on reissue version of this album as a bonus track. The album quickly replaced Gloria Estefan's "Mi Tierra" at #1 on Billboard Latin Tracks Charts and made the top 200 Billboard's Pop Charts."Amor Prohibido" was number 1 for 78 weeks, which beats Gloria Estefan's 58 weeks. It also led to 6 awards at the Tejano Music Awards ceremony attended by more than 45,000 people, and another Grammy nomination in 1995. More than 400,000 copies had sold by the time of Selena's death a year later. This album was also released 1 day before the death of Luis Donaldo Colosio.
