Aogashima

Aogashima ('ヶ島)a volcanic island in the Izu Islands (伊豆諸島) and administered by the Tokyo (東京都) Metropolitan government, Japan, lies south of Tokyo and south east of the Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka prefecture.

Aogashima, with an area of 5.98 km² and a population of approximately 200, lies 354 km south of Tokyo. Aogashima, the third smallest of the inhabited Izu Islands, forms part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The island is located at 32'28 N, 139'46 E.

Fishing is the main industry. There are a number of small shrines on the island. The island is a rare, small double volcano. Ikenosawa caldera is a good camping area.

The popular summer cattle festival doubles as the island's home-coming. During this festival, the population of the island doubles.

Ths island has one elementary school and one junior high school.

Access to the island is limited to a daily ferry and by helicopter.
