Arturis
|
Arturis, a member of Species 116, from the Star Trek: Voyager episode " Hope and Fear". |
Arturis is a fictional character from the
Star Trek universe, portrayed by
Ray Wise. He is humanoid in appearance. His head is completely hairless with a larger cranium than humans, paler skin and a light covering of large light-brown spots. He appears in the
Voyager episode entitled "
Hope and Fear." He is one of only a small number of his species to have escaped from the
Borg's mass
assimilation and incorporation of their home planet into Borg space.
The name of Arturis' species is never disclosed, though the equivalent Borg designation is Species 116. The species has exceptional
linguistic aptitude far beyond the capabilities of any other race that
Starfleet has ever encountered. Arturis himself claims to know over 4,000 languages. He is also highly
proficient in computer programming languages and uses this as a means to mislead the
Voyager crew by tampering with and rewriting a subspace message from the
Alpha Quadrant.
Arturis is at first portrayed as a wise, patient and highly benevolent character, though it soon becomes apparent that his outward display of
altruism is nothing more than a façade to deceive
Captain Janeway and the crew of
Voyager, with the intention of exacting revenge on them for allowing his home world to be destroyed by the Borg. Arturis blames Janeway for his planet's assimilation, noting that his species had managed to avoid assimilation for centuries until
Voyager intervened in the Species 8472 conflict and aided the Borg in defeating their adversaries, allowing them to focus their efforts of assimilating Arturis' species. Ultimately, Arturis' plan fails and backfires on him, and he is captured and assimilated by the Borg as a result.
