Atton Rand
Atton is an Echani-trained pilot that the main character meets on the asteroid mining station
Peragus II.Atton fought in the
Mandalorian Wars as well as the
Jedi Civil War. He originally fought with
the Republic, and when
Revan won against the
Mandalorians and became Darth Revan, Atton remained under his command and joined the
Sith.
During the Jedi Civil War, Atton was part of an elite
Sith assassin unit, trained to resist Jedi
Force powers and sent on missions to kill or capture Jedi to be broken and converted to Sith. Later during the war, Atton was confronted by a female Jedi who informed him of his Force-sensitive nature, warning him that the Sith would undoubtedly command him to train as a
Dark Jedi if they found out. Atton struck her down, but before her death, she opened up her mind to his, giving him a glimpse of the Force as she saw it. Enraged, Atton killed her, though the impression she left caused him to become disillusioned and desert the Sith.
After the
Jedi Exile frees him from a force cage at the Peragus Mining Facility and works with him to escape, Atton reluctantly continues to travel with him. In time, Atton recounts some incriminating details of his past before the Exile, expecting to be punished for his crimes. However, the Exile is able to forgive Atton, and, at his request, trains him in the ways of the Jedi Sentinel. Atton continues to travel with the Exile, participating in the defense of
Telos against a Sith armada led by
Darth Nihilus and, shortly after, taking the Exile to
Malachor V, where the Exile went on to defeat
Darth Sion and
Darth Traya.
Atton can become a Jedi or Dark Jedi Sentinel during the game after you have visted
Nar Shadaa and spoke with the
Twi'lek in the Refugee Sector who knows him and reveals that he has a secret. If you talk to him about it, and with enough influence, he will begin his training.
If the Jedi Exile is made female by the player, then Atton will have a possessive relationship with her; however, the ending is the same with just a few dialogue changes.
In the cut ending of the game, Atton was supposed to die due to wounds inflicted by
Darth Sion, if the Jedi Exile was female and had achieved the romantic relationship with him.
Atton's name could be a reference to the word "
atonement," which relates to his need for forgiveness for the "sins" he committed as a Sith assassin. The given name "Atton" also belonged to a corrupt
New Republic fighter pilot trainer in the novel
X-Wing: Wraith Squadron, suggesting it may be a common name in the Star Wars universe.
His age is based on
Chris Avellone's comment, who says he's between 29 and 32 years old. Rumors say his homeplanet is Eres III, but this hasn't been certified. The name
Atton Rand was initially planned to be given to the character that was to be featured in
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, but the idea was scrapped and the player renamed to
Jaden Korr. If the player character in
Sith Lords asks Atton who he is when the two first meet, he says, "I'm Atton. I actually wasen't supposed to make it into the
final game, but I was created at the minute. Blame my agent. I was actually slated for a spin-off to Jedi Knight, but I don't want explain what happened know what 'there'".
In the book "Star Wars: The Ultimate Visual Guide", Atton is listed as Atton "Jaq" Rand. Weither "Jaq" is a middle name or nickname is not stated.
*Atton is rumored to be the ancestor of
Han Solo, the infamous smuggler and hero from the Star Wars movies
A New Hope,
The Empire Strikes Back, and
Return of the Jedi.
