United States. The population was 8,705 at the 2000 census. Belmont is home to
Belmont Abbey College.

United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.3

mi²). 20.9 km² (8.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (1.82%) is water.
As of the
census of 2000, there were 8,705 people, 3,348 households, and 2,226 families residing in the city. The
population density was 416.0/km² (1,077.3/mi²). There were 3,552 housing units at an average density of 169.7/km² (439.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 84.39%

married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 28.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males.
