Bolgar (town)

Bolgar (; ), inofficially called
Bulgar,
Bolgari or
Bolgary, is a town in the
Republic of Tatarstan,
Russia. It is located on the left bank of the
Volga River, 140 km from
Kazan, at . Population: 8,655 (
2002 Census).
The historical City of
Bolghar is situated in the vicinity.
The modern town was founded in
1781. It was called
Spassk until
1926, then
Spassk-Tatarsky until
1935, then
Kuybyshev in honour of
Valerian Kuybyshev until
1991, then it was finally renamed Bolgar. In
1953, the town was moved from the place of its foundation closer to historical Bolghar, due the construction of
Kuybyshev Reservoir and drowning of the original Spassk.
