Bonneville County is named after
Benjamin Louis Eulalie de Bonneville (
1796–
1878), a
French-born officer in the
United States Army,
fur trapper, and explorer in the
American West. Bonneville is noted for his expeditions to the
Oregon Country and the
Great Basin.
Bonneville County is part of the Idaho Falls, ID
Metropolitan Statistical Area.
According to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,923
km² (1,901
mi²). 4,839 km² (1,868 mi²) of it is land and 83 km² (32 mi²) of it (1.69%) is water.

The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.33.
In the county the population was spread out with 32.10% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 10.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 99.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.20 males.
