Breakaway (album)

Breakaway is the second album by Kelly Clarkson released on November 30 2004 (see 2004 in music). It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 album chart with sales of 250,000 units. After spending 61 consecutive weeks in the top twenty of the U.S. Albums Chart, Breakaway descended to number twenty-four. It is only the fourth album in history to stay in the top 20 consecutively for a year. It then remained in the top 30 for 13 more weeks, making it in the top 30 for 74 consecutive weeks. It was certified five times platinum in January 2006 for sales of over five million copies and over ten million copies worldwide. The first four singles from the album reached the top ten of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, with the fifth single just missing the top 10. Currently, all five singles released have sold over 4.13 million downloads.

At the 2006 Grammys, Breakaway was named Best Pop Vocal Album and the single "Since U Been Gone" was named Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

According to IFPI (see IFPI), over 2 million copies have been sold in Europe.

Singles

* "Breakaway" is the first single from the album and will be the fifth single release in the UK, after "Walk Away". It originally appeared on the soundtrack to The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. A departure from the pop and soul Clarkson had become known for, the song was co-written in part by fellow singer Avril Lavigne. It peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached the top ten of more than ten Billboard charts (including twenty-one non-consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart). In Canada, the song was also extremely popular, peaking at number three. It has sold over 780,000 downloads to date.
* "Since U Been Gone" is the second single from the album, but the first in the U.K. It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and came in at number 4 on the 2005 year end chart. It is now Clarkson's most successful single in radio and sales terms; it has sold over 1,300,000 digital downloads in the U.S. It reached number one on several Billboard charts, and topped the Canadian charts for two weeks. The RIAA certified the track Gold for 500,000 ringtones sold on June 14, 2006.
* "Behind These Hazel Eyes" is the third single from the album in the US and the second in the U.K. The song continued the streak of extremely popular releases from Clarkson. It reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and came in at number 10 on the 2005 year end charts. It reached number four on the Canadian charts. It has sold over 800,000 downloads to date.

* "Because of You" is the fourth single from the album - third in U.K. The song debuted at number ninety-nine on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 3 2005, and reached its peak position of number seven on November 10 2005. It has sold over 730,000 downloads. It also debuted and peaked at number four on the Australian ARIA Charts. The track also did exceptionally well in Canada, peaking at #2 and staying within the top 20 for twenty-seven consecutive weeks.
* "Walk Away" is Clarkson's fifth single release from her album, having debuted at number ninety-seven on the Billboard Hot 100, a week before its original January 17, 2006 release date. The tune debuted on the Canadian charts the following week at #100. The single peaked at #12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and at #4 in Canada. "Walk Away" was released on March 6th, 2006 in the U.K. as the fourth single and hit #21. In Australia, the single experienced similar success, reaching #27. Over 600,000 downloads have been sold.
* "Gone" Although never officially released as a single, Top 40 radio stations began playing the song around November 2005, and it has gained significant airplay on such stations as New York's Z100, Boston's Kiss 108 and Atlanta's Q100. Because of this, "Gone" managed to chart on the Pop 100 Airplay at #41 and the Pop 100 at #77. "Gone" has a Spanish version called "Me Voy" (I Leave) sung by successful-Mexican pop band RBD.
