Dun Carloway Broch, Lewis |
Carloway or
Càrlabhagh (in Scottish Gaelic) is a district of the
Isle of Lewis in the
Outer Hebrides. Located on the west coast of the island there is a lively rural Gaelic-speaking community in Carloway. Carloway has a school, which offers Gaelic Medium education and there is also a small Gaelic-medium nursery. Today Carloway has a population of about 400 people. The district is most famous for the
Carloway Broch (
Dùn Chàrlabhaigh) found at Doune and the
Gearrannan Blackhouse Village. Carloway attracts many tourists each summer. Carloway is unique to other districts in Lewis in that most of the local services are found close together, at the Carloway Bridge. Carloway has a medical practice, a police station, a post office, a hotel (
Doune Braes) and a well-used
Community Centre. The district has two
Presbyterian Evangelical
churches, one belonging to the
Free Church of Scotland and one to the
Church of Scotland. Most church services are in
English today, although the Free Church has a monthly
Gaelic service. Carloway offers many clubs and activities, which are based in the local community centre. There is a Community Association and Community Council, a historical society (which runs a small museum), there is an OAP group, various youth clubs, a gardner's club and a learning association.
Loch Carloway, fed by the
Carloway River forms an inlet at the mouth of East
Loch Roag.
