Connie Schultz
Connie Schultz (born
July 21,
1957), of
Cleveland, Ohio, is a
columnist for
The Plain Dealer newspaper, and winner of the
2005 Pulitzer Prize for
commentary. Schultz was also a 2003 Pulitzer Prize finalist in feature writing. She was raised in
Ashtabula, Ohio and received a degree in
journalism from
Kent State University in 1979. Prior to this, she attended
Cleveland-Marshall College of Law,
Cleveland State University, for two years. It was during her time in law school that she met her former husband, law professor
Stephen Gard.
In April of 2006, Schultz published her first book,
Life Happens : And Other Unavoidable Truths, a collection of her previously published columns.
She is currently married to
U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, a
Democratic Congressman representing northern
Ohio. Because of her husband's campaign for U.S. Senate, Schultz has taken a leave of absence from
The Plain Dealer and is actively campaigning across the state of Ohio.
She has one daughter and stepson (with Gard) and two stepdaughters.
