Des Clarke
Desmond M.Clarke BSc (NUI) PhD (Notre Dame) DLitt (NUI) MRIA. is an author and professor of philosophy at
University College Cork, in
Cork,
Ireland. His academic achievements include: His research interests lie predominantly in the 17th century, on such topics as the history of philosophy and theories of science - with a specific interest in the writings of
Rene Descartes, as well as contemporary church/state relations, human rights, and nationalism. He is currently co-editor of the Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy series, and he is the translator of the
Penguin edition of Descartes'
Meditations on First Philosophy. Prof. Clarke has been a vocal opponent of UCC president Gerard T Wrixon's redevelopment plans for the university, culminating in the governing body of the college voting to remove him. However it was established that the body didn't have any such right, and Prof. Clarke remains a member of the governing council as of
May 2006.
