Dharmapuri District

Dharmapuri District

Dharmapuri District is an administrative district of Tamil Nadu state in southern India. Dharmapuri is the district headquarters.

The district occupies an area of 9,622 km² and has a population of 2,856,300 (as of 2001). It is bounded on the north by Krishnagiri District, on the east by Tiruvannamalai and Viluppuram districts, on the south by Salem District, and on the west by Karnataka's Chamarajanagar District. Dharmapuri District was created in 1966, when it was separated from Salem District. Krishnagiri District was formerly part of Dharmapuri, becoming a separate district in 2004. Dharmapuri town is also called Thakadoor. Dharmapuri is famous for mangoes. Hogenakkal falls is the famous tourist spot in Dharmapuri District.

This district is listed as the third-most backward district in Tamil Nadu. It is only 15.96% urbanised as per Census 2001. [1]
