Earl Cawdor
Earl Cawdor, of Castlemartin in the County of Pembroke, is a title in the
Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in
1827 for
John Campbell, 2nd Baron Cawdor, along with the courtesy title
Viscount Emlyn, of Emlyn in the County of Carmarthen. Campbell had previously represented
Carmarthenshire in the
House of Commons. The title
Baron Cawdor, of Castlemartin in the County of Pembroke, was created in
1796 in the
Peerage of Great Britain for the first Earl's father John Campbell, who had earlier represented
Nairnshire and
Cardigan in Parliament. They were both descendants of Sir John Campbell, third son of
Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll (from whom the
Dukes of Argyll also descend). The present Earl Cawdor is also the 25th
Thane of Cawdor.
The ancestral seat of this branch of the Campbell family is
Cawdor Castle in
Nairnshire.
