Elbert Henry Gary

Elbert Henry Gary (1846-1927) was an American lawyer and corporation official, born at Wheaton, Ill. He was mayor of Wheaton for two terms and county judge of DuPage County for two terms. He practiced law in Chicago for 25 years, serving as railroad and corporation counsel for various companies.

He helped found U. S. Steel with J. P. Morgan in 1901, and became the chairman of its board of directors and finance committee. The city of Gary, Indiana, is named for him.
