F. Murray Abraham

F. Murray Abraham (born Fahrid Murray Abraham on October 24, 1939 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an Academy Award-winning American actor. He is of Syrian and Italian heritage. He is a Syrian Orthodox Christian.

He attended the University of Texas at Austin, then studied acting under Uta Hagen in New York City. He began his acting career on the stage, making his debut in a Los Angeles production of Ray Bradbury's The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit.

He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Amadeus (1984) as Antonio Salieri.

Abraham has been married to Kate Hannan since 1962; they have two children.

Trivia

* In a televised interview post-Amadeus, F. Murray was once asked how he felt about the difficulty of the acting profession, and what happens when young, aspiring actors simply cannot cope with all the stress and rejection. F. Murray's response was stern. He expressed no concern nor sympathy at all. To paraphrase, he stated that if the struggling actors could not handle the trials of the business, they should get out and leave room for the strong.
