Fullmetal Heart (Fullmetal Alchemist episode)

Fullmetal Heart (Japanese: 「鋼の""ろ」 - Hagane no Kokoro) is episode 23 of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2004-03-13.

Edward is in the hospital, recovering from the wounds he received in the confrontation with the homunculi at Laboratory 5. Alphonse is a mess, too--Gluttony ate the arms and legs of his armor. Also, the taunts of Barry the Chopper and Ed's unasked question (which he was afraid to ask) are echoing in Al's mind, placing him in a deep depression. Winry arrives to fix Ed's broken automail arm and makes friends with Colonel Hughes and his family. Colonel Hughes debriefs Ed, whom Lt. Ross has lectured on the need to share his burdens with the adults he ought to trust and who can help him. With his arm repaired, Ed restores Al's armor once more. But Al's heart, figurative as it may be for a soul attached to a suit of armor, is not so easily repaired. Alphonse is convinced he never really existed as a human, and runs off in despair.

Miscellanea

*This episode is also known by the alternate title "Heart of Steel". The American distributor, while intending to use "Fullmetal Heart" as the title, made a mistake and used the alternate title on a title screen.
*Izumi and Sig Curtis can be seen momentarily looking at a posted sign in the Central train station just before Winry sees Major Armstrong. The similar scene occurs at the same point in the manga.
*A second before Izumi and Sig appear, you can see an unnamed man wearing a white suit, holding a suitcase, and smoking a cigarette. This same character appears a few times at different points in the manga as well.
