Glamour photography

Glamour photography is the photographing of a model (usually female), in a way that is intended to be about the subject, rather than the clothes she is wearing or the product she is implicitly endorsing. Sometimes the glamour photography genre is identified as erotic, since glamour photography deliberately exploits the sexual attractiveness of its subjects. The term "glamour photography" is sometimes used as a euphemism for soft-core pornography.

While many fashion models pose for glamour photos, glamour photography is not fashion photography, though the two forms often overlap. The key difference between the two genres is that glamour photography is truly about the subject while fashion photography is about what the subject is modeling or implicitly endorsing. Normally a fashion model "looks away" in an image so the viewer doesn't make eye contact, whereas in glamour the model tends to look more toward the camera (viewer).

What is considered "glamour photography" has changed with the times and originated in the early 1920's with photographers like Ruth Harriet Louise who photographed celebrities to "glamorize" their stature. As glamour photography evolved, in the 1940s, clothed pin-up pictures were glamour. Many movie stars were featured in pin-up poses showing them in swimsuits. In the 1950s and early 1960s, photographers such as Peter Gowland produced glamour images with partial nudity.

Nude or semi-nude pictures of glamour models typically appear in "softcore" publications like Playboy, Perfect 10, or in the pages of European tabloid newspapers like The Sun's Page 3, however, glamour photography does not have to include nudity as evidenced today by the covers of many fashion, women's and men's magazines that feature celebrities on their covers.
