Hampton Falls, New Hampshire



Hampton Falls is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, USA, settled in c. 1640 and icorporated in 1722. As of 2005, a total of 2,008 people live within the borders of the town.

History

First settled in appoximately 1640, Hampton Falls was officially established as the "Third Parish" of Hampton. Later, the small town received its grant as an independent town in 1726. Numerous falls on the Taylor River provided water power for mills. Once a farming and lumbering community, the town is today largely residential, with numerous antique shops along U.S. Route 1.http://www.nhes.state.nh.us/elmi/htmlprofiles/hamptonfalls.html

Hampton Falls resident Meshech Weare, a descendant of mill owners, was New Hampshire's first president, later called governor, in 1776. Other notable residents include governor Wesley Powell, politician Warren Brown, architect Ralph Adams Cram, and poet John Greenleaf Whittier, a summer resident.

Hampton Falls is primarily a residential community. Applecrest Farm Orchards,Applecrest Orchards official site established in 1913, is the town's largest employer, with 18 employees; Faro Gardens,Faro Gardens official site with 17 employees, is the town's second largest. The remaining top five employers include Jensen and Zumbado attorneys, Dodges Agway, and The Hampton Falls Inn.Hampton Falls Inn official site

In addition to Applecrest Orchards, Elton Orchards operated in Hampton Falls. It was located in the western portion of the town. It closed in c. 1975. A small cul-de-sac, Elton Lane, was named after it.

Schools

Currently, the Lincoln Akerman School is the only one in town. But at one point, four schools were existed, the North, South, East, and West schools. The Lincoln Akerman School was the replacement for the East School after it burned down in 1947.

Geography

Hampton Falls borders Kensington to the west, Exeter and Hampton to the north, and Seabrook to the south. Some other nearby places include Boston, Massachusetts, only 45 miles away, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a mere 15 miles to the north.http://www.hamptonfalls.org/

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 32.4 km² (12.5 mi²). 31.6 km² (12.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (2.4%) is water. The highest point in Hampton Falls is Great Hill (230 feet / 70 meters above sea level).

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,880 people, 704 households, and 546 families residing in the town. The population density was 59.4/km² (153.9/mi²). There were 729 housing units at an average density of 23.0/km² (59.7/mi²).

The racial makeup of the town was 98.46% White, 0.05% African American, 0.74% Asian, 0.05% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.69% of the population.

There were 704 households out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.5% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.4% were non-families. 16.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 30.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 102.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $76,348, and the median income for a family was $86,229. Males had a median income of $60,250 versus $36,750 for females. The per capita income for the town was $35,060. About 2.2% of families and 2.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.1% of those under age 18 and 3.3% of those age 65 or over.

According to State figures, "Population in Hampton Falls tripled over the last fifty years, growing above the statewide average rate in three of the five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a nine percent increase between 1970-1980 to a 42 percent increase between 1960-1970. Population in Hampton Falls grew by a total of 1,251 residents, going from 629 in 1950 to 1,880 residents in 2000."
