Hasaw Chan K'awil
Hasaw Chan K'awil (
682-
734), meaning "Double Moon" or "Lord Chocolate," was a
Mayan ruler of
Tikal of the
Jaguar clan. He was married to his queen Lady Twelve Macaw (d.
704) and in
711 he triumphed in war against
Calakmul.
Tikal, "Place of Voices", is home to 6 great Mayan pyramid temples of which Hasaw Chan K'awil is entombed in the earliest built. It is contented who actually built this famed temple but it was built within 3 generations of the jaguar clan rulers - Hasaw Chan K'awil,
Yik'in Chan K'awil, and
Yax Ain.
