John Longmire

John Longmire (born December 31, 1970) played for Australian rules football for the Kangaroos Football Club of the Australian Football League.

AFL career

At 194 cm and 101 kg, John Longmire was built for playing full-forward. His powerful physique and size earned him the nickname Horse. At North Melbourne, he formed a powerful goalkicking partnership with centre half forward Wayne Carey.

Longmire began his playing career at the Corowa-Rutherglen club in New South Wales, where he won the Ovens & Murray Football League's leading goalkicker title. His ability and size quickly attracted the interest of the North Melbourne VFL club's talent scouts.

He won the Coleman Medal at only 19 years of age, and led the club goalkicking from 1990-4. In 1990 he won the Club Best and Fairest at North Melbourne.

Tragically for Longmire he missed the entire 1996 season due to injury, and was not considered for the 1996 Grand Final.

For some time he held the MCG ground record of 14 goals in a match.

Longmire's 200th and last game was the 1999 Grand Final.

Post football

He has since returned to Sydney to take up an assistant coaching position with the Sydney Swans.
