John Salmon Ford

John Salmon Ford (May 26 1815November 3 1897), better known as John "Rip" Ford, was member of the Republic of Texas Congress and later of the State Senate, Texas Ranger, Confederate officer, and journalist. He commanded the Confederate forces in the last battle of the American Civil War, the Battle of Palmito Ranch on May 12-13, 1865. It was a Confederate victory, but it occurred after the surrender of all Texas armies and so had no effect on the outcome of the war. It is considered the last major confrontation of the Civil War.
