John Saul

For the Canadian philosopher, see John Ralston Saul.

John Saul (born February 25, 1942) is an author of thriller novels.

John was born in Pasadena, grew up in Whittier, California, and graduated from Whittier High School in 1959. He went on to several colleges, variously majoring in anthropology, liberal arts and theater, but never obtained a degree.

After leaving college, he decided that he wanted to become a writer, and spent fifteen years working in various jobs while trying to improve his craft.

Eventually, John found an agent who sent manuscripts around for several years, trying to get John signed. Finally, in 1976, Dell books contacted him about one of his manuscripts. They didn't want to buy that particular novel, but they did ask him if he'd be interested in writing a psychological thriller.

The book he wrote was Suffer The Children, which became very successful, appearing on all the best-seller lists in America and even reached the number one spot on the list in Canada. Subsequently, all of his novels have reached the best-seller list in America and have been published world wide.

In addition to writing, John is also interested in theater, and has had several one-act plays produced in both Los Angeles and Seattle.

John lives part-time in the Pacific Northwest, both in Seattle and in the San Juan Islands. Saul also has a residence on the Big Island of Hawaii. He is a frequent speaker at the Maui Writers' Conference.
