Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (
Hindi: कभी ख़ुशी कभी ग़म,
Urdu: کبھی خوشی کبھی غم - "Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sadness") is a
Bollywood film released in
India and countries with large
NRI populations on
December 14,
2001.
It features some of
Bollywood's most popular actors:
Amitabh Bachchan,
Jaya Bhaduri,
Shahrukh Khan,
Kajol,
Kareena Kapoor,
Hrithik Roshan and
Rani Mukerji in a guest appearance. It is director
Karan Johar's second movie (after
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai).
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is the highest grossing Indian film overseas. It climbed up to 3rd place in the British box office within two weeks of release, and maintained its place for over 3 weeks. The film was also thought to have broken the American Box Office Top 10, but this remains uncertain due to a lack of confirmed figures from the distributors. The film was the first Bollywood feature to see a theatrical release in
Germany (with German subtitles, a
dubbed version was produced, too). It was the highest grossing Indian film ever until 2002's release
Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
The first half of the story is told in flashbacks: Rohan Raichand (
Hrithik Roshan) visits his grandmothers and both of them tell him what happened to his older, adopted brother Rahul, who suddenly disappeared:
Rahul Raichand (
Shahrukh Khan) is the adopted son of Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (
Amitabh Bachchan) and his wife Nandini (
Jaya Bachchan). Both of them love Rahul as if he was their biological son. Yashvardhan Raichand is a traditionalist and arranges a wedding between Rahul and the daughter of a friend of his, Naina (
Rani Mukerji). Naina, who has known Rahul for years, is secretly in love with him, but Rahul's feelings towards her are merely brotherly.
One day, while delivering medication to his old nanny Sayeeda (
Farida Jalal), he meets the lively Anjali Sharma (
Kajol) and is immediately attracted to her. Socially, her family is below the Raichand family, so Rahul's father would not accept a marriage between the two. Moreover, Yash loves Naina like his own daughter and would like to see her and Rahul get married. Rahul, however, has fallen in love with Anjali and she reciprocates his feelings. When her father (
Alok Nath) dies, Rahul marries her. In response, Yashvardhan Raichand disowns him. Rahul, deeply hurt, leaves for London, taking Anjali, Sayeeda, and Anjali's little sister Pooja (
Kareena Kapoor) with him.
Years pass and Rohan returns as an adult from the same private school Rahul attended.
After listening to the story of his brother, Rohan vows to bring him back to India and make his father forgive him. He searches for Rahul in London and with the help of Pooja, he manages to live under Rahul's roof under a false name. He lures his father and mother to London - and when Yash Raichand finds out why he is in London, he is outraged, while Rahul is deeply touched when he learns who Rohan really is.
Meanwhile, in India, the paternal grandmother dies, and the two brothers, along with their father, have to attend the funeral ceremony. Afterwards, Rahul wants to leave for London, but Rohan and Pooja, who have fallen in love with each other, beg him to stay, as does Anjali, who misses India dearly. Finally, Nandini convinces Yash Raichand to forgive his son - they reconcile, Anjali is accepted as the daughter-in-law, and Pooja and Rohan can now get married.
One noticeable aspect of the movie is that the latter half takes place principally in
London, where several of the characters are supposedly studying to earn their
MBA at
King's College London.
Filming locations include:
Egypt,
Bicester Village Shopping Centre (on DVD's deleted scenes),
Blenheim Palace (King's College in the film),
Bluewater Shopping Centre (the mall), Bond St., Kingsway Rd.,
Covent Garden,
British Museum,
Butler's Wharf,
Heathrow Airport,
Leicester Square,
Millennium Stadium in
Cardiff,
