Karl Earl Mundt
Karl Earl Mundt (
1900 -
1974) was an
American educator and a
Republican United States Senator from
South Dakota from 1948 to 1973. He was preceded by
Harlan J. Bushfield, and was followed by
James Abourezk. Resigned from Congress on December 30, 1948 after being appointed to fill vacancy after the resignation of Senator Vera C. Bushfield (R). Before entering politics, Senator Mundt worked as a teacher of social science and speech (1924-27), and as superintendent of schools in
Bryant, South Dakota from 1924-1927.
In 1954, he chaired the Senate Subcommittee on Investigations for the
Army-McCarthy Hearings.
