King Saud University
King Saud University (جامعة الملك سعود) located in
Riyadh is
Saudi Arabia's oldest and premier
university. It was founded in
1957 as
Riyadh University and was renamed in honour of
King Saud in
1982. It was created to meet Saudi Arabia's shortage of skilled workers. Today the school has over 24,000 students, including many women. It offers a wide array of programs.
The school was constructed in the 1980's by Blount International, Inc., a construction firm led by
Winton M. Blount, after the firm was awarded the world's then largest fixed-price contract in history for the sum of approximately $2 billion.
The dean (Ameed) of student affairs is
Fahd Al-Musnad, while the vice-dean (Wakeel)
Muhammad Al-Bishr.
Although primarily for Saudi students, the University also offers foreigners the opportunity to study either within the College of Education or Arts (although there are exceptions).
The university has at least two main cafeterias. Students are able to buy their meals for two riyals (perhaps due to subsidation).
The University offers students housing within the student housing (Sakan At-Tulab) currently headed by
Faisal Al-Turky. Saudi students must however make a payment of around 1500 Riyals each semester which foreign students are given housing with no charge.
