Kitakami (北上市; -shi) is a city located in Iwate Prefecture (岩手県/Iwate-ken) on the main island (本州/Honshū) of Japan (日本/Nihon).*The 1st city of Kitakami was founded on April 1, 1954. *The current and the 2nd city of Kitakami was founded on April 1, 1991 when the 1st city merged with the villages of Iwatsuriko and Waga (both from Waga District).The city is famous for the sakura (さくら) that bloom in Tenshochi Park (公'展勝地/Kōen Tenshōchi), which is regarded as one of the best hundred places in Japan to view sakura.Another hallmark of the city is Oni Kenbai (鬼剣舞), a traditional sword dance where the dancers dress as demons, performed during summer festivals.As of August 2005, the city had an estimated population of 93,323, and a density of 213.29 persons per km².
