Death of a Ladies' ManAs a mere combination of words, "ladies' man" would have several meanings, only some part of which are reflected in the meaning associated with typical usage. It is generally used in a pejorative sense.
While appearing to be a straightforward use of the
possessive case, it does not mean that the man is owned by the ladies, except in the sense of the large investment the man makes in fraternizing with the ladies, or that he is "one for the ladies", or his desire to be accepted allows his actions to be directed by a lady.
It is usually used in a pejorative sense, to indicate disapproval of a man. The impropriety implied is having interactions beyond the speaker's values with regard to segregated gender roles and normative modalities of social contact. Depending on the speaker and context this can variously be
*Actual exploitation of women
*Being close to more women than seemly. e.g. Violation of norm that an adult man should speak with no woman other than his wife.
*Spending an excessive amount of attention on his "face" towards women, instead of "manly" pursuits.
It also contains a
misogynistic undertone, suggesting that there is something improper in associating with women,e.g. all women are witches and of the devil, so being with a woman is wrong.
