LaMont Johnson
LaMont Johnson (born in
1941) is an
American jazz pianist who has played in the
hard bop and post-
bop genres. He recorded extensively with
Jackie McLean in the
1960s, and has also recorded with
Ornette Coleman,
Kenny Burrell,
Bud Shank,
Paul Beaver, and
Bernie Krause, among others.
LaMont established a record company on the lower east side in New York City in the late 1960's. It was located on Pitt Street and was named Down East Records. It housed offices for Down East records and a recording studio. He released a R&B single by "Justin" entitled "Right Now". This became one of the first R&B records to utilize a latin/jazz/R&B fussion in comercial music. It was in that studio that he also began the recordings for Cat Mother (a rock group bought by Jimi Hendricks) and a Arnette Coleman Album.
