This is a list of the 100 largest incorporated cities in the United States (including Puerto Rico), based on the United States Census Bureau's July 1, 2005 population estimates.Census Bureau Estimates Program (2005) These figures are lower than the populations of metropolitan areas, the primary meaning of "city" in many parts of the world. In some cases two or more of the cities listed are in the same metropolitan area.

* Indianapolis, Louisville, and Nashville are consolidated city-counties; the population given is for the entire city excluding other incorporated places lying within the city limits.

** Due to accepted challenges to the 2005 population estimates, the populations of Washington and St. Louis increased from the original estimates of 550,521 and 344,362, respectively, to the revised figures listed above.

*** The population estimate given for New Orleans does not reflect the impact of Hurricane Katrina. Population estimates as of June 2006 ranged from 192,000 to 230,000.

**** Hawaii has no incorporated municipalities other than the City and County of Honolulu, which actually includes the entire island of Oahu. In accordance with Hawaiian law, the U.S. Census Bureau defines the state's "cities" and "towns" as Census-designated Places (CDPs). The Census defines Honolulu CDP as the portion of the City and County that is coextensive with the Judicial District of Honolulu. Honolulu CDP is what is generally thought of as the "city" of Honolulu, and its population is used here and in other population comparisons.
