Liz (Elizabeth Kate) Claman, (born
December 12,
1963), is the co-anchor of the
CNBC morning program
Morning Call and anchor of the CNBC newsmagazine program
Cover to Cover. Previously, Claman was co-host of the program
Wake-Up Call. She also substituted for
Brian Williams when his newscast appeared on CNBC.
Claman was born in and grew up in
Beverly Hills, California. For her early education Claman went to
Phillips Academy in
Andover, Massachusetts, where she was a
disc jockey for the school radio station, and to
Beverly Hills High School.
Claman earned a
bachelor of arts degree in
French from the
University of California at Berkeley in 1985 and has a
Certificat Supérieur de Français from the
Sorbonne.
Claman started out as an assistant to
Paula Zahn at Los Angeles
television station KCBS-TV. From there, she went on to an on-the-air reporting job at
WSYX-TV (
Columbus, Ohio), a stint hosting a morning talk show at
WEWS-TV (
Cleveland), and a weekend anchor position at
WHDH-TV (
Boston). In April 1998 she started as a freelancer at CNBC, then based in
Fort Lee, New Jersey. (CNBC is now in
Englewood Cliffs.) Six weeks into her 13-week trial period, CNBC gave Claman a long-term contract.
Claman won several local
Emmy Awards.
Claman's husband, Jeff Kepnes, is a Senior Producer for
Paula Zahn Now on
CNN . She has two children. Claman lives in
New Jersey.
Claman's father is a
urologist and an associate clinical professor of urology at the
UCLA School of Medicine. Her mother, actress June Claman, was educated at The
Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in
London,
England. One of her three sisters, Danielle, is an executive for
Showtime. Another sister is a studio musician in Hollywood. Her one brother is also a musician.
Claman is
Jewish. She is a member of the
charitable organization Hadassah and has been featured in an article in that organization's magazine. Claman is a Big Sister in the Big Brother/Big Sister program at the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services of Manhattan.
Claman is an avid
public speaker. She has given talks or moderated discussions about issues regarding women and mothers in the workplace.
An article in the
New York Times once called Claman a
giant swimsuit model.
Claman is writing a book on investing,
The Best Investment Advice I Ever Received, that is scheduled to be published in November 2006.
Claman completed the
New York City Marathon in 2005.
Claman once responded to a fan e-mail stating she looked like a
cow with a one word e-mail reply, "Mooooo
