Lomma Municipality is located in
Skåne (Scania), about 10
kilometers north of
Malmö, in southernmost
Sweden. Its seat is located to the small town
Lomma.
The small municipality borders to
Kävlinge,
Burlöv,
Staffanstorp and
Lund. As Burlöv also is notably small, Lomma almost borders to Malmö too.
It is situated by
Öresund, at the inlet of the at the small river
Höje å. Along the river lies a small-boat harbour. The beaches along its coasts also attract visitors from other municipalities; Lomma's beaches are the principal beaches for people from the beach-less
Lund.
10 kilometers to the north-east is the university city of
Lund, with some 90,000 inhabitants, about the same distance as to
Malmö (with its 250,000 inhabitants) to the south. Lomma is also considered part of
Metropolitan Malmö, showing itself for instance by the 6,500
commuters that live in Lomma. Travelling to and from Lomma is easy, as a main highway actually passes straight through the town of Lomma, connecting with Lund and Malmö, and with other cities to the north.
Geologically, its terrain is almost completely flat levelled, which is the custom for south-western Skåne as a whole. The highest location in Lomma is 40 meters above sea level.
The area where Lomma is now is located between two small rivers, and was inhabited by hunters in the
Stone Age. The name
Lomma can be traced to 1085, and in the ensuing centuries it established some wealth thanks to merchancy with the episcopal see in Lund.
None the less, the area was only a village until Sweden's first
cement works was established in
1871. The ground consists of a certain clay stemming from the last
ice age, and is available in large quantities in Lomma. A full fledged industry was started in the 1860s, and by the end of the century Lomma had five brick factories. The bricks from Lomma are yellow of appearance and were regarded as the highest kind of bricks during that century. One church built with those bricks is the church in Lomma, (
Lomma kyrka), a large
neo Gothic church that was finished in the 1870s.
The municipality of Lomma was created in 1900; however at the time it was much smaller than today. It got its current size in 1960 when it was united with two other municipalities. From that time stems the coat of arms. It depicts an
anchor and a brick wall, indicating that Lomma once actually had city rights (when it belonged to Denmark, before the
Treaty of Roskilde 1658) as well as its brick industry.
The two main towns in the municipality are Lomma and
Bjärred. With some 8,300 inhabitants, they have almost the exact same population figures, and combined they house 93% of the municipal population. In comparisment, Bjärred may be regarded as a somewhat more fashionable town than Lomma.
None of the remaining population centres are significant: of the others,
Flädje is the largest with its 210 inhabitants. Of note is also
Alnarp, where one of the main
campuses of the
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences is located.
