The M9 motorway is also a road in Ireland, part of the DublinWaterford route, see N9 road.

The M9 motorway is a major motorway in Scotland. It runs from the outskirts of Edinburgh, bypassing the towns of Linlithgow, Falkirk, Grangemouth and Stirling to end at Dunblane.

Route

The road is approximately 30 miles long, and runs in a roughly north-west direction from the M8. It meets the A8 at Newbridge - a traffic blackspot before the junction was grade separated. Its next junction is a motorway spur towards the Forth Road Bridge - however it is only half finished, dumping its traffic onto the badly overloaded A8000 road two miles short of the bridge. The spur is being extended to the A90 dual carriageway as it approaches the bridge so as to relieve congestion. The project is due for completion early 2008.

The road shares space with one mile of the M876 en route to the Kincardine Bridge east of Stenhousemuir. At Stirling it meets the M80, taking over the main route to the final roundabout at Dunblane. From there, the A9 runs all the way to Thurso.
