McKean County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population was 45,936. Its county seat is Smethport6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,549 km² (984 mi²). 2,542 km² (982 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it (0.26%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there were 45,936 people, 18,024 households, and 12,094 families residing in the county. The population density was 18/km² (47/mi²). There were 21,644 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.46% White, 1.87% Black or African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 18,024 households out of which 30.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.50% were married couples living together, 10.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% were non-families. 28.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the county, the population was spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 100.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.70 males.
