Mickey Morandini
Michael Robert Morandini (born
April 22,
1966 in
Kittanning, Pennsylvania) is a former
second baseman in
Major League Baseball who played for the
Philadelphia Phillies (1990-97, 2000),
Chicago Cubs (1998-99), and
Toronto Blue Jays (2000). He turned an
unassisted triple play, which he accomplished by tagging
Barry Bonds on
September 20,
1992. A pivotal player on the Phillies'
1993 National League championship team which lost the
World Series, he was named an
All-Star in
1995.
Morandini was typical of second baseman of his era, fielding his position well but never hitting many home runs and rarely hitting for substantial average. He possessed extra-base power (finishing seventh in the league in doubles in
1995 and
1997, and among the National League leaders in triples from
1992 to 1995), good speed (123 career stolen bases), and had a career fielding percentage of .989 at second base. While never showing noticeable acuity at slugging, Morandini mananged to tag two homers on July 1, 1999 against the Milwaukee Brewers, one of which the wind barely carried into the basket above the outfield wall of Wrigley Field.
