council areas of
Scotland , and a
lieutenancy area . It borders onto
Scottish Borders ,
East Lothian and the
City of Edinburgh .
Before 1996 it was a
district within the former
Lothian Region and prior to 1975 it was a
county . The county was officially known as the
County of Edinburgh until
1921 and was sometimes called
Edinburghshire during the 19th century.
There is a
Midlothian constituency of the Scottish Parliament and a
Midlothian constituency of the House of Commons .
