km². The total area is 317.96 km².
Nanao is situated in the middle of
Noto Peninsula and was the ancient capital of
Noto Province. It has several popular
onsen such as
Wakura Onsen, which is regarded as one of the most high-grade onsen in Japan.
The city of Nanao was founded on
October 1,
2004, by the
merger of the old Nanao-shi (七尾市), Tatsuruhama-machi ("鶴浜"), Nakajima-machi (中島"), and Notojima-machi (能登島"). The old Nanao-shi was founded on
July 20,
1939, and as of
2003 (before the merger) it had an estimated population of 46,743, density of 324.67 persons per km², and a total area of 143.97 km².
