Nayden Todorov (
1974-) is a renowned
Bulgarian pianist, composer, and conductor.
He born in
1974 in
Plovdiv,
Bulgaria. He received his first piano lessons at age five and by sixteen had led his first concert as conductor. He studied with
Alexander Vladigerov in
Sofia and later with Karl Osterreicher in
Vienna. In 1993 he graduated summa cum laude from the Dobrin Petkov Music High-School in Plovdiv, specializing in trumpet, piano, conducting and composing. In the same year he began his conducting studies under professor Uros Lajovic at the Music University in Vienna. He completed the first part of his studies in 1996 and went to Jerusalem, where he continued his musical education, specializing in conducting with Mendi Rodan, Music Director of the Israel Symphony Orchestra and professor at the Rubin Academy of Music. In 2001 Nayden Todorov graduated also summa cum laude from the New Bulgarian University in Sofia. From 1995 to 1997 Nayden Todorov was the recipient of scholarships from the international foundation St. Kyrill and Metody and from the Vienna chapter of Rotary International, and from 1996 until 1998 from the Georg Wachter foundation in Switzerland. He won prizes at the Svetoslav Obretenov national competition, the competition for Czech music, as well as the Special Prize of the Slovakian music funds, the Borghese Foundation Prize, the Sdravko Manolov Prize, the Sofia Prize for the production of the opera Faust by Gounod with Sofia National Opera and others in Europe and the USA.
He has already conducted various orchestras in Europe, Asia and America. While still a student, he created the
Plovdiv Youth Orchestra with which he toured extensively in Germany, Austria and other countries. From
1995 to
1997 he was conductor of the Vratza Philharmonic Orchestra; from
1997 to
1999 of the Sofia Festival Orchestra; and in the 1998/99 season, he was selected from an international competition of 150 conductors to become Resident Conductor of the Israel Northern Symphony Orchestra in Haifa. He also served as Principal conductor of the
Vidin Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director and Chief conductor of the Plovdiv State Opera and Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra. Since year 2000 he is a permanent guest conductor of Sofia National Opera. Since season
2003/
2004 Nayden Todorov is a principal guest conductor of Sofia National Philharmonic and from year 2005 he is General Music Director of Rousse State Philharmonic & Opera.
Maestro Todorov has recorded over one hundred compact discs for Naxos, RENT Music, MMO, Danacord, Balkanton, Israel Music Institute and Hungaroton and has also created several music productions for various radio and TV stations. In addition he is the Music Director of the much-lauded
Thracia Summer International Music Festival.
