Neem Karoli Baba
Neem Karoli Baba, born Lakshmi Narayan Sharma, also known to followers as Maharajji and
Neeb Karori Baba, was a
Hindu guru and a devotee of
Hanuman. He was born at
Akbarpur,
Firozabad district in the
Indian state of
Uttar Pradesh. After an arranged marriage at the age of 11, he left his home and wandered. He later became known as Lakshman Das. When he did tapasya at Bavania in Gujarat, he was known as Tallaiya Baba. Considered by many to be a
saint, he died in 1973 in
Vrindavan.
He is known in the west for being the
guru of a number of young westerners drawn to Indian
spirituality in the
1960s and
1970s, who were responsible for the proliferation of his name in the West. These disciples include the authors
Ram Dass and
Dada Mukerjee (a former professor from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India), and the musicians
Bhagavan Das,
Jai Uttal,
Krishna Das,
Larry Brilliant, and many others. He practiced a distinctive style of
bhakti yoga, and preached service to others as a form of unconditional devotion to God.
