Neem Karoli Baba

Neem Karoli Baba, born Lakshmi Narayan Sharma, also known to followers as Maharajji and Neeb Karori Baba, was a Hindu guru and a devotee of Hanuman. He was born at Akbarpur, Firozabad district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. After an arranged marriage at the age of 11, he left his home and wandered. He later became known as Lakshman Das. When he did tapasya at Bavania in Gujarat, he was known as Tallaiya Baba. Considered by many to be a saint, he died in 1973 in Vrindavan.

He is known in the west for being the guru of a number of young westerners drawn to Indian spirituality in the 1960s and 1970s, who were responsible for the proliferation of his name in the West. These disciples include the authors Ram Dass and Dada Mukerjee (a former professor from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India), and the musicians Bhagavan Das, Jai Uttal, Krishna Das, Larry Brilliant, and many others. He practiced a distinctive style of bhakti yoga, and preached service to others as a form of unconditional devotion to God.
