Paschal English

Paschal English (born March 5, 1945) is a Survivor contestant who played in Survivor: Marquesas and is notable for being the only Survivor to be eliminated based on pure luck. In the last episode, when it was just him, Neleh Dennis, Vecepia Towery, and Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien, the four could not agree on who to vote out. (Kathy and Vecepia were voting against Neleh and Neleh and Paschal were voting against Kathy. Paschal had not been voted against.) So Jeff Probst had three of the survivors pull rocks out of a bag. Two of them were yellow and one was purple. The person who got the purple one would be removed from the game. Vecepia did not pull a rock as she had won immunity. Paschal English got the purple rock and was eliminated. He was reported to have passed out from exaustion not too long after leaving the premises.

Probst later revealed that Paschal's elimination was messed up. Normally, in the tiebreaker the two people who were tied on the voting would then become safe, while the others would draw rocks to determine an elimination. This works every time except when there are four people remaining, as one of the two who would draw rocks has immunity, and can't be eliminated. When the same situation arose in Survivor: Palau, the two contestants tied in the voting competed in a challenge to determine an elimination.

Paschal's two-person alliance with Neleh was one of the most memorable in "Survivor" history. Together, they were part of the counter-alliance against the "Rotu 4," led by John Carroll, in the most significant power shift on the show up to that point. He also became very close friends with another member of the counter-alliance, Sean Rector, despite initial distaste for him.

In his private life, English serves as Chief Judge of the Fayette County, Georgia Superior Court and hails from Thomaston, Georgia. He earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity.
