Perm Krai
Perm Krai () is a
federal subject of
Russia (a
krai) that came into existence on
December 1,
2005 as a result of the
2004 referendum on the merger of
Perm Oblast and
Permyakia Autonomous District. The city of
Perm became the administrative center of the enlarged subdivision. As of the 2002 census, combined population of the two entities was 2,819,421, and the total area was 160,600 km², resulting in a population density of 17.6/km².
Permyakia still has an autonomous status within Perm Krai. During
2006–
2008, it will also retain a budget separate from that of the krai, keeping all federal transfers. After that, Permyakia's budget will be subject to the budgeting law of Perm Krai. The transitional period was implemented due to the fact that Permyakia relies heavily on federal subsidies, and an abrupt cut would be hurtful to its economy.
