Piz Bernina is the most eastern mountain higher than 4,000 m in the Alps. Although the massif straddles the Swiss-Italian border, the highest summit is entirely on Swiss territory.
The mountain got its name in 1850 from Johann Coaz, who achieved the first ascent.
It is the left mountain of the two high peaks on the photo on the right. The mountain on the right is the Piz Morteratsch.
