Putnam County is a
county located in the
U.S. state of
Illinois. As of
2000, the population is 6,086. The County was formed in 1825 out of
Fulton County. The name is in honor of
Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the
French and Indian War and a general in the
American Revolutionary War. Its
county seat is
Hennepin, Illinois6.

km² (172
mi²), making it the smallest county in Illinois. 414 km² (160 mi²) of the county is land and 32 km² (12 mi²) of it (7.23%) is water.

The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the county the population was spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.20 males.
