Rakhmon Nabiyev

Rakhmon Nabiyev (Раҳмон Набиев; alternative spelling Rahmon Nabiev, born 1930 " died 1993) was the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Tajikistan, twice served at the President of Tajikistan, and was one of the main instigators of the Tajikistan Civil War. Nabiyev first came to power in 1982 as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Tajikistan, but was ousted from power in a corruption scandal in 1985. After Tajikistan declared independence in September 1991 Nabiyev orchestrated his way back into power on September 23, only to step down the next month as pressure mounted for him to vacate the office during the campaign for the presidential elections. Nabiyev won the elections and on December 2 1991 he became the first elected President of Tajikistan to take office. Disputes concerning the election lead to demonstrations by the opposition that paralyzed the country and in May 1992 the country fell into a state of civil war. Nabiyev was ousted in a coup in September 1992 and officially resigned office from the safety of his home province of Leninabad. The instability that followed led to a protracted conflict and eventually to the installation of Emomali Rahmonov as the country's leader. Nabiyev died in 1993.
