SG-1 arm patch

SG-1 (Stargate Team 1) is the flagship and primary unit of Stargate Command in the science fiction TV show Stargate SG-1, of which they are the main characters.

Stargate Command (or "the SGC"), is a top-secret military base that controls the Stargate, a device capable of initiating a wormhole to other such devices on other planets, allowing for travel between them. There are a number of SG teams (e.g. SG-2, SG-3, etc.) whose job are to go through the Stargate on missions. The teams were created along with the base when the alien race called the Goa'uld became a threat to Earth ("Children of the Gods").

SG-1 is a multi-tasked unit with a variety of duties, including first contact, reconnaissance and combat, diplomacy, and initial archaeological surveying and technological assessment. The SG-1 original team consisted of Captain Samantha Carter, Doctor Daniel Jackson, Teal'c and Colonel Jack O'Neill as the Commanding Officer.

The standing orders of SG-1 are as follows:

#Open diplomatic negotiations with other worlds.#Obtain technologies to help defend Earth against the Goa'uld, the Ori and other aggressors.

Team members

The original four members of SG-1 (from left to right): Teal'c, Samantha Carter, Jack O'Neill and Daniel Jackson.

The members of SG-1 remained stable for the first five seasons of SG-1. However, at the end of Season 5, Daniel Jackson dies from exposure to severe radiation("Meridian"). Interestingly, he Ascends to a higher plane of existence, so this 'death' is not permanent. Throughout Season 6 he is replaced by Jonas Quinn. Jonas remained with SG-1 for a year, before returning home in an attempt to bring peace to the factions of his home world. It is at this time that Daniel, Ascended, is forced back into the mortal plane as punishment for interfering in mortal affairs ("Full Circle"). He remains on the SG-1 team ever afterwards.

Colonel Jack O'Neill was promoted to Commander of the SGC in Season 8, and so Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Carter took command of a three-membered SG-1. Following the defeat of the Goa'uld, the unit unofficially disbanded, with each member going their own separate ways. Carter went on to head Stargate Research and Development out of Area 51, Teal'c to take part in the forming of the newly emerging Free Jaffa Nation and Daniel to join the Atlantis expedition, whilst Jack was promoted again, effectively leaving the SGC. Early in Season 9, under new commander Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell, SG-1 is reformed. Currently, SG-1 consists of Cameron Mitchell, Daniel Jackson (as he missed the flight to the Pegasus Galaxy), Teal'c, and Lt. Colonel Carter.

Season 10's "Morpheus" brought in Vala Mal Doran as a probationary employee of the SGC, generally travelling withâ€"and hence a de facto member ofâ€"SG-1.

Alternate universes

The membership of SG-1 has also varied in several alternative universes. In Season Nine alternative teams included Martouf and Janet Fraiser.

History

Season 1

SG-1 was originally composed of three members, Colonel Jack O'Neill as commanding officer, Daniel Jackson, newly returned from Abydos after the events of Stargate, and Captain Samantha Carter, one of the original scientists trying to open the Stargate before Daniel succeeded, assigned by the Air Force. It was one of two original units, the other being SG-2 under the command of Major Charles Kawalsky. Daniel originally joins the team to find his wife, Sha're, who was taken as a Goa'uld host. He quickly understands the importance of their mission, and stays with the team even after the death of his wife.

Their first mission brought them to Chulak, where they were taken prisoner by Apophis. SG-1 was freed by Teal'c, First Prime to Apophis. Teal'c had come to doubt the Goa'uld as gods, and he has ambitions to fight for the freedom of all Jaffa. He eventually becomes the fourth member of SG-1, and his knowledge of the Goa'uld proves invaluable on many occasions.

Seasons 2-5

More than two years after the creation of SG-1, Carter is promoted to Major.

Shortly after, Major Castleman is given command of SG-1 when O'Neill is overwhelmed by Ancient knowledge. He is later saved by the Asgard, and returns to command.

Approximately one year later, Jack O'Neill goes undercover to arrest rogue elements of the NID. As part of this operation, Jack breaks procedure and is forced to take early retirement. Col. Makepeace briefly acts as commander of SG-1, before it is revealed that he is a mole within the SGC, and is arrested.

During the fourth year, SG-1 was temporarily disbanded after General George Hammond was replaced as leader of Stargate Command. Jack was suspended, Teal'c was transferred to SG-3 and Daniel and Sam were both assigned to positions on base. This arrangement did not last long.

At the end of the fifth year, Daniel Jackson was killed after he was exposed to a lethal dose of radiation when saving the lives of people in Kelowna. With the help of the Ascended being Oma Desala, he Ascended to a higher plane of existence, leaving SG-1 with three members.

Season 6

SG-1 attempted to find a suitable replacement for Daniel, but ultimately failed. Eventually, Jonas Quinn, a native of Kelowna, was able to persuade O'Neill that he would make a good addition to SG-1. He quickly proved a resourceful addition to the team.

Season 7

Daniel watched over SG-1 as an Ascended being, visiting them during several trying times. However, while attempting to use his powers to defend Abydos, he was forced to return to human form for breaking the rules: he was not permitted to interfere. SG-1 discovers him while searching for the Lost City of the Ancients. SG-1 briefly consisted of five members, before Jonas Quinn returned to his homeworld to attempt to bring peace, and to educate them about the Goa'uld. SG-1 returns to its original lineup.

As Jack is exposed to Ancient knowledge for a second time, he hands off command to Major Carter. She remains in command until the Asgard are able to save him once again.

Season 8

O'Neill is promoted to Brigadier General, and the head of the SGC, and command of SG-1 is passed on to a newly promoted Lt. Colonel Carter. SG-1 returns to a three member team, occasionally augmented by General O'Neill.

Season 9

SG-1 as seen in Season 9 (from left to right): Teal'c, Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, SGC commander Maj.Gen. Hank Landry, Lt. Col. Samantha Carter and Dr. Daniel Jackson

At the end of the eighth year, SG-1 unofficially disbands. Carter went on to head Stargate Research and Development out of Area 51, Teal'c to take part in the forming of the newly emerging Free Jaffa Nation and Daniel to join the Atlantis expedition. Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell is assigned by request to head SG-1. He is given a list of candidates, but quickly gives up on the interview process. It is his desire to have the original team back together, but the former members are slow to rejoin. Unofficially, Daniel Jackson and Teal'c are with him from the very beginning, the former because of missing the Daedalus, the latter because the schedule of the Jaffa High Council allows him to do so; Samantha Carter rejoins to aid in the destruction of the Ori beachhead. Eventually, the team reunites officially during the hunt for Ba'al; Teal'c has become disgusted with the machinations of the High Council, and Daniel and Carter joined to help defend our galaxy against the Ori threat.

Thanks to Vala Mal Doran they learn that the Ori has built an entire fleet, and a second supergate in our galaxy, so SG-1 quickly organise a fleet from the Earth ships Odyssey and the Korlev, numerous Free Jaffa hatak ships and even some Lucian Allience ships in order to hold at bay the Ori invasion. Unfortunately the battle turns out to be a disaster as the Ori ships easily destroys the organised fleet whilst their shields sustain no visible demage.

Season 10

The Ori began their invasion of the Milky Way galaxy. Miraculously all members of SG-1 survive the disastrous battle, and shortly after they rescue Vala Mal Doran from one of the Ori ships during the invasion of Chulak.

Notable accomplishments

The exploits of SG-1 are extensive. They have proved to be an extremely resilient and capable team.
*The team single-handedly brings about the demise of several key Goa'uld, including Apophis and Anubis.
*SG-1 is responsible for saving Earth on many occasions. In particular:
**They disobey a direct order and in doing so, destroy the invasion fleet of Apophis.
**The brilliance of SG-1, particularly Carter, comes into light as they prevent a large asteroid from impacting Earth.
**They destroy an Asgard vessel which was infested with Replicators before it can invade Earth.
**Using the Ancient knowledge possessed by Jack O'Neill, they discover and activate an Ancient outpost in Antarctica, and in doing so defend Earth from the massive invasion fleet of Anubis.
*SG-1 forges alliances between the people of Earth (known in the parts of the galaxy once ruled by the Goa'uld as the Tau'ri), the Tok'ra and the Jaffa Resistance.
*The team, especially Teal'c, is instrumental in aiding the Jaffa Resistance, and help form the new Free Jaffa Nation.
*They make numerous first contacts, notably the Tollan, the Asgard and the Nox.
