Sing the Sorrow

Sing the Sorrow was the first major-label release by the alternative rock band AFI, released as a compact disc in 2003 (see 2003 in music). The album reached the #5 position on the Billboard charts, and was certified gold on April 30, 2003 by the RIAA. This album went platinum in December of 2004. Some consider Sing the Sorrow to be a concept album about a man who dies and is destined never to reincarnate because he possesses the Chinese astrological sign of the Rabbit. (The Rabbit makes an appearance in the music video for "Girl's Not Grey", as well as artwork in various album booklets).

Hidden/Bonus tracks

"...but home is nowhere" is the twelfth track on the album. It ends at 3:50, followed by silence until 4:28. Then there is an untitled poem, which some refer to as "the Spoken Word", written by Davey Havok and Jade Puget, until 8:36 when it goes into a different song, titled "This Time Imperfect" (the title can be found in the booklet that comes with the CD). The UK Version of the CD also contained two bonus tracks, "Synesthesia" and "Now the World". These tracks were available to download from a "secret site" to which the US version of the album gave access.

Unreleased tracks

The track "Rabbits are Roadkill On Route 37" was removed from Sing the Sorrow prior to its release. The song was played by AFI during a radio station interview (KROQ) in October 2005. It is included on the compilation album MySpace Records, Vol. 1, which was released on November 13, 2005.

Also in the Clandestine DVD book, there is a tracklisting on one of the pages. Most are songs from the actual album, but the listing starts at track 3 and ends at track 17. The two Leaving Songs are omitted and can possibly be tracks 1 and 2, and "Rabbits are Roadkill" is included. Ideas that "Rabbits are Roadkill" was the original name for "Girl's Not Grey" have been disproven, since the band released the song ("Rabbits are Roadkill") sometime in 2005. However, theories remain that some tracks are either out of order or have the names switched, or perhaps both. The two Leaving Songs are songs some cite as proof that the cd tracks are improperly ordered. Others note that the video Clandestine ends with a beating heart sound, which is what begins the track "Bleed Black," making that theoretically the true beginning of the cd, so that "The Leaving Song, Pt. II" is rightfully the final track as well. Carcinogen Crush and 100 Words are both unreleased tracks from the recording session. "Miseria Cantare (The Beginning)" is also omitted from the listing.
