Tagesschau

Tagesschau ("View of the Day") is the title of a television news programme broadcast on several German-language television stations.

The Tagesschau on ARD, Germany

In Germany, the programme (currently styled on screen tagesschau, with lower-case) is both the oldest and the most widely watched news broadcast on television. The first edition was transmitted on NWDR (Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk) on 26 December 1952 and at first the programme went out three times per week. From 1956 it was shown from Monday to Saturday, and since 1961 it has been shown daily, making it Germany's oldest still-running news programme. The Tagesschau has an approximate daily audience of 10 million viewers, which is equivalent to an audience reach of around 33%. Today it is produced by the NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk) in Hamburg.

The most popular edition of the programme is the 15-minute bulletin broadcast at 20:00 each evening. Other editions are broadcast at times which may vary, though there are generally shorter editions at 15:00 and 17:00. In 1978 the late edition of the Tagesschau was replaced by the longer half-hourTagesthemen ("Subjects of the Day"), normally broadcast as 22.15 and including background discussion. At around 00:30, Nachtmagazin ("Night Magazine") also includes an analysis of the preceding day's events. The weekly news review Wochenspiegel ("Mirror of the Week") is also produced by the Tagesschau team.
