Tarbet

Tarbet is the name of several places in Scotland, as follows:
* Tarbet, Argyll and Bute, a village on the side of Loch Lomond
* Tarbet, Lochaber a hamlet on the shore of Loch Nevis
* Tarbet, Sutherland, a hamlet on the west coast, near Handa Island

* The bays of West Tarbet and East Tarbet near the Mull of Gallowayhistorically the word means a place of portage where boats were hauled out of the water and manhandled across a neck of land to be relaunched elsewhere to avoid a long, impassable or dangerous sail around a cape or peninsula. some of these locations had settlements which assimilated the name.
