Thomas Gair Ashton, 1st Baron Ashton of Hyde
Thomas Gair Ashton, 1st Baron Ashton of Hyde, (1855-1933), was a British politician and industrialist.
Ashton was born at
Fallowfield, Lancashire on
5 February,
1855. He was the son of
Thomas Ashton and
Elizabeth Gair, whose own father was
Samuel Stillman Gair of
Rhode Island.
He was educated at
Rugby School,
Warwickshire between 1868 and 1874. From 1874 until 1877 he attended
University College, Oxford. He graduated as a
Master of Arts.
Between 1885 and 1886 Ashton was the
Liberal MP for
Hyde. He was a
Justice of the Peace for
Cheshire and
Sussex. In 1886 he was unsuccessful in his attempts to win the
seat of Hyde.
Ashton married
Eva Margaret James on
2 December 1886 in All Saints Church,
Ennismore Gardens, London.
From 1895 until 1911 he was MP for
Luton, in
Bedfordshire.
On 28 June 1911 he was created 1st Baron Ashton of Hyde. In 1923 Lord Ashton was invested as a Honorary
Fellow of
Oxford University.
