Tim Martin (businessman)

Tim Martin is the founder and chairman of the British pub chain Wetherspoons.

Biographic details

Timothy Randall Martin was born April 1955 in Northern Ireland. He was educated in 11 schools in Northern Ireland and New Zealand, including Campbell College. He studied law at Nottingham University. He claims his hobbies are drinking beer, playing squash and weight training.

Appearance

Martin is six foot six inches tall, broad shouldered and has his hair cut in a mullet.

Wetherspoons

Martin was studying for a law degree, but did not enjoy doing so. He thought that he would be able to own and manage a pub, and offered to buy one. On his first day he was unable to let the cleaning staff into the building and had to call a locksmith, upon finally gaining entry, customers had arrived and had to be let into an unprepared pub, still uncleaned from the previous day. This set of mishaps inspired Tim to name the pub after a school teacher in New Zealand (who's surname was Wetherspoon) who could not control his class and thus founded the British pub chain Wetherspoons.
